Today I'm welcoming Gifford MacShane and her book - The Woodsman's Rose (Donovan Family saga book 2) - to my blog as part of the blog tour hosted by The Coffee Pot Book Club (founded by Mary Anne Yarde)

I'm delighted to share a review with you all, but first I'll introduce the book.

The Woodsman's Rose

1880s Arizona

Daniel Donovan wants nothing more than to get married, unless it's to restore his friendship with his closest friend, Alec Twelve Trees.

Alec is raging about his mother's murderer, whose identity Daniel knows but will not reveal, as the killer is dead and the family he left behind would be compromised if the knowledge became public. But Alec cannot recognize any needs but his own, and the rift between the friends grows wider every day.

Daniel's fiancée, Annie, is a delicate girl, her health frail and her future uncertain. Prone to vicious headaches that at times rock her to her knees, she’s accepted Daniel’s ring but is hesitant to name their wedding date, worried that marriage and possible pregnancy will exacerbate her physical problems.

Annie inherited the gift of insight from her Welsh mother and digs into the past, searching for a way to help Alec and Daniel mend their relationship. But when she discovers the secret behind the murder, it’s more horrifying than she could have imagined.

It may take more than Annie’s small strength and inherited skills to bring the friends together again. And that’s before a new enemy shows his face.

Now for the review -

A family saga set in Arizona in the late 1880s— it really sounded like my kind of book, and I could not wait to read it. However, I was initially a little nervous as this is Book 2 in the series, and I had not read Book 1, but I need not have worried because, through careful use of dialogue, Gifford MacShane fills in a great deal of the backstory.

The protagonists of this story are Daniel and Annie. Daniel has loved Annie for a very long time, but it is only recently that Annie has begun to see Daniel as more than a very good friend. Daniel’s courtship of Annie is delightful. He is the perfect gentlemen and so incredibly caring that it is next to impossible for Annie to resist him.

Annie is somewhat reluctant to marry at the beginning of this book, and that reluctance is born out of fear—Annie’s mother died in childbirth. But the moment Annie decided to grasp life with both hands and take a risk is when she comes into her own. I thought Annie’s portrayal was incredibly realistic as well as moving. Annie is a character that not only stole my heart through her vulnerability, but I was also in awe of her determination, especially when one considers her fear and poor health. It is this invisible inner strength that Annie possesses that helped to drive this story forward.

Likewise, I enjoyed reading about Daniel. Daniel is a very heroic, very kind man who will do absolutely anything for the woman he loves. There was nothing that I did not like about him.

The Woodsman’s Rose is so much more than a romance novel. It is filled to bursting with action, adventure and danger. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, and I am looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Gifford MacShane

Gifford MacShane is the author of historical fiction that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit.

Her novels feature a family of Irish immigrants who settle in the Arizona Territory in the late 1800s. With an accessible literary style, MacShane draws out her characters' hidden flaws and strengths as they grapple with both physical and emotional conflicts.

Singing almost before she could talk, MacShane has always loved folk music, whether it be Irish, Appalachian, spirituals, or the songs of the cowboys. Her love of the Old West goes back to childhood, when her father introduced her to the works of Zane Grey. Later she became interested in the Irish diaspora, having realized her ancestors must have lived through An Gorta Mor, the Great Irish Potato Famine of the mid-1800s. Writing allows her to combine her three great interests into a series of family stories, each including romance, traditional song lyrics, and a dash of Celtic mysticism. Having grown up in a large & often boisterous Irish-American family, she is intimately acquainted with the workings of such a clan and uses those experiences to good purpose (though no names will be named!)

MacShane is a member of the Historical Novel Society, and is an #OwnVoices writer. A self-professed grammar nerd who still loves diagramming sentences, Giff currently lives in Pennsylvania with her husband Richard, the Pied Piper of stray cats.

Today I'm welcoming Heidi Eljarbo and her book - The Other Cipher - to my blog

Today I'm welcoming Heidi Eljarbo and her book - The Other Cipher (Book 2 of Sol Hansen Mysteries) - to my blog as part of the blog tour hosted by The Coffee Pot Book Club (founded by Mary Anne Yarde)

I'm delighted to share a review with you all, but first I will introduce the book.

The Other Cipher

In the captivating second book of the Soli Hansen Mysteries, two women—separated by more than three hundred years—are connected through their love of art.

1613. Fabiola Ruber is been wed to a man she does not know and must live in a country with a new language and different customs. The memories of a lost love in her hometown Malta haunt her, and she sets out to find an artist who can do her portrait and recapture the feelings she had when she once modeled for a renowned Italian master painter.

1944. Four years into World War II, art historian Soli Hansen works with the Norwegian resistance to locate significant artwork and safeguard the pieces from the Nazis. When she finds out the Germans are after a hidden baroque depiction of a seventeenth century woman, she must muster all her courage and skills to decipher encrypted codes and preserve the mysterious art before it’s too late.

Both women are determined to do what they can to bring healing and redemption to their otherwise ominous future. Through tangled, bewildering clues and an eye for detail, Soli’s bond to Fabiola grows closer by the day. She must find the missing painting before the enemy does.

Ranging from a privileged life in seventeenth century Antwerp to Oslo during the German occupation of the second world war, this dual timeline is a historical mystery thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end.

Now for the review-

The year is 1613 and Fabiola Ruber has commissioned a painting of herself and her daughter for her husband. Four centuries later and the Nazis are pillaging the priceless artwork of the countries that they have occupied. They have heard about a painting by the famous baroque artist, Peter Paul Rubens, and they are determined to add it to their collection. Unfortunately for them, the Resistance is looking for it as well, and unlike the Nazis, the Resistance has the cipher which will tell them where the painting has been hidden, but first, they must decipher the code. The race is on. Who will get to the painting first?

If I could describe the perfect book, it would probably be this one, for it has everything that I love. There is nothing better than a good historical mystery in my opinion, and this book had everything in it that I love. It has art, conspiracy, secrets, lies, oppression, defiance, and there is also a hint of a very tender romance. Who is on the side of the Resistance and who is not? Who can be trusted in a world turned upside down by warfare and occupation? There are a lot of questions in this novel, and I enjoyed trying to figure the answers out along with Soli.

I thought the depiction of Oslo during the occupation was masterfully drawn. The author has portrayed a country that is seemingly submissive but there is a core of anger, honour and determination that they will win their country back someday. And although stealing and hiding a painting may seem like a small thing when taking into consideration the larger picture, the fact that, if they succeed, they will thwart the Nazis and save something that belongs to their country cannot be dismissed. It would be a small victory, but a victory none the less.

I thought this book was a wonderful novel, and it is one that I can see myself coming back to again and again.

Welcoming Heidi Gallacher and her book - Rebecca's Choice - to my blog

Today I'm welcoming Heidi Gallacher and her book - Rebecca's Choice - to my blog as part of the blog tour hosted by The Coffee Pot Book Club (founded by Mary Anne Yarde)

I am delighted to share a review with you all but first I will introduce the book.

Rebecca's Choice

Can Rebecca find the love and passion she craves within a Victorian world that seems to be conspiring against her?’

It is 1887 and Queen Victoria is on the throne. Businessman and meteorologist Geoffrey de Roussier is passionate about his weather station and railways, yet little of his passion seems to filter through to his shy, naïve young wife, Rebecca.

Following his tragic demise, Rebecca discovers that Geoffrey’s railroad investments have failed, leaving her penniless. As the past threatens to engulf her, Rebecca realises she has to make a choice. Gwilym Llewellyn, Geoffrey’s trusted friend and advisor, has an emotional debt to repay to Geoffrey and meets Rebecca to offer her a solution. Meanwhile Rebecca has found passion in another direction …

One man will save her from destitution, the other will offer her the love and excitement that she aches for. Whom will she choose?

This book has a beautiful setting in Cardiff, South Wales. If you like a good mix of an evocative depiction of the Victorian era and a modern-thinking heroine then Rebecca’s Choice is the novel for you.

This is Heidi Gallacher’s debut novel, a compelling historical Victorian romance. Pick up ‘Rebecca’s Choice’ today to lose yourself in this wonderful story!

Praise for Rebecca’s Choice

Now for the review -

Set during the latter half of The Victorian era, Rebecca’s Choice is the story of one young woman who marries for security rather than love.

Rebecca spends the majority of this book trying to convince herself that she is happy. Her husband, Geoffrey, always treats her with kindness and respect, but he makes it very clear from the beginning of their marriage that he will never love her. Geoffrey’s back story is tragic, after a fated love affair, he is determined never to love again, but I could not help and feel slightly angry towards him. He is married to a wonderful woman who deserves to be loved, but Geoffrey is either too frightened or is completely incapable of giving Rebecca the love she deserves. However, their marriage does offer financial security, and Rebecca feels that security is more important than love. So, she does what she can to make the marriage work.

When Geoffrey dies in a tragic accident, Rebecca finally has the chance to find true love. However, Geoffrey had made some unwise financial investments. Having never needed to concern herself about money, Rebecca finds herself in a desperate situation which leaves her with the most unbearable of choices. To achieve the financial security she needs, she has to marry again, but the man she marries has to be wealthy enough to support herself and her children, and that is something that the man she loves cannot give her. Rebecca has to make some terrible choices in this novel, and I really felt for her on more than one occasion. But the era is what it was, and I could understand the decisions that Rebecca thought she had to make. I thought Rebecca was wonderfully portrayed, and she shined a glaring light into the era, and the place women had in it.

I thought the author’s historical depiction of this time in history was drawn with exquisite care and attention. Along with an utterly captivating narrative, I found it next to impossible to put this book down. Rebecca’s Choice is a truly fabulous story, and one I can see myself reading again and again.

Welcoming M J Porter and her book - The Danish King's Enemy - to my blog

Today I'm welcoming M J Porter and her book - The Danish King's Enemy - to my blog as part of the book blast hosted by The Coffee Pot Book Club (founded by Mary Anne Yarde)

Delighted to bring a book blast to you all. Introducing The Danish King's Enemy...

The Danish King's Enemy

Every story has a beginning.

Leofwine has convinced his king to finally face his enemies in battle and won a great victory, but in the meantime, events have spiralled out of control elsewhere.

With the death of Olaf Tryggvason of Norway, England has lost an ally, and Leofwine has gained an enemy. And not just any enemy. Swein is the king of Denmark, and he has powerful resources at his fingertips.

In a unique position with the king, Leofwine is either honoured or disrespected. Yet, it is to Leofwine that the king turns to when an audacious attack is launched against the king’s mother and his children. But Leofwine’s successes only bring him more under the scrutiny of King Swein of Denmark, and his own enemies at the king’s court.

With an increase in Raider attacks, it is to Leofwine that the king turns once more. However, the king has grown impatient with his ealdorman, blaming him for Swein’s close scrutiny of the whole of England. Can Leofwine win another victory for his king, or does he risk losing all that he’s gained?

The Danish King’s Enemy is the second book in the epic Earls of Mercia series charting the last century of Early England, as seen through the eyes of Ealdorman Leofwine, the father of Earl Leofric, later the Earl of Mercia, and ally of Lady Elfrida, England’s first queen.

Welcoming David Fitz-Gerald and his book - She Sees Ghosts - to my blog

Today I'm welcoming David Fitz-Gerald and his book - She Sees Ghosts - The Story of a Woman Who Rescues Lost Souls (Part of the Adirondack Spirit Series) - to my blog as part of the blog tour hosted by The Coffee Pot Book Club (founded by Mary Anne Yarde)

Delighted to share a review with you all but first I will introduce the book.

She Sees Ghosts

A blazing fire killed her family and devoured her home. A vengeful demon haunted her. Ghosts of the Revolutionary War needed help that only she could provide. A young woman languished, desperate to survive, and teetered on the edge of sanity.

Mehitable grew up in a freshly tamed town, carved from the primeval forest. Family, friends, and working at the mercantile filled her days and warmed her heart. For Mehitable, life was simple and safe, until tragedy struck. When her family perished in their burning home, she retreated into a world of her own making.

As a young girl, she had seen glimmers, glimpses, and flickers of the spirit world. She closed her eyes. She turned her back. She ignored the apparitions that she never spoke of, desperately hoping they would leave her in peace. She was mistaken.

Grief-stricken, Mehitable withdrew from the human world. Ghosts were everywhere. They became bolder. She could no longer turn her back on the spirit world. Her friends feared for her survival. Nobody understood her. She would have to find her own way.

Fans of TV’s Ghost Whisperer and Long Island Medium will especially love She Sees Ghosts. This historical novel features memorable characters and delivers bone-tingling, spine chilling goosebumps. It stands on its own and it is the next installment in the Adirondack Spirit Series by the award-winning author of Wanders Far―An Unlikely Hero’s Journey. David Fitz-Gerald delivers a historical novel with a bittersweet ending that you won’t see coming.

Would she save the spirits’ souls, or would they save her? Only time would tell.

Can you imagine navigating your way through a world where you can see the dead?

She Sees Ghosts—an intriguing title with an equally intriguing plot. I was utterly captivated as I followed Mehitable’s journey as she bravely attempts to deal with everything life throws at her. There are horrors that Mehitable must face, namely the loss of her entire family in one tragic accident, but surprisingly this is in no way a book full of heartbreak and pain. Yes, at times this book did make me cry, but I also found myself smiling as the plot developed.

Mehitable is an incredibly brave and a very strong woman, considering what life has thrown at her. Thankfully, she does not have to face this journey alone for she has some very loyal friends by her side. Polly and Reuben relationship is lovely, and their friendship with Mehitable was beautiful to behold. It was as if they were one big family, as if Mehitable was a sister to them both. The simplicity of their bond made me smile, as even the simplest things, such as baking pies, demonstrated their closeness, the everydayness of their lives, despite the supernatural element of the story.

The story was entrancing and I found it hard to step away from it, preferring instead to read just one more chapter! David Fitz-Gerald has penned a novel that I found incredibly captivating, entertaining and heart-wrenching, for which I applaud him.

David Fitz-Gerald

David Fitz-Gerald writes fiction that is grounded in history and soars with the spirits. Dave enjoys getting lost in the settings he imagines and spending time with the characters he creates. Writing historical fiction is like making paintings of the past. He loves to weave fact and fiction together, stirring in action, adventure, romance, and a heavy dose of the supernatural with the hope of transporting the reader to another time and place. He is an Adirondack 46-er, which means that he has hiked all of the highest peaks in New York State, so it should not be surprising when Dave attempts to glorify hikers as swashbuckling superheroes in his writing. She Sees Ghosts―A Story of a Woman Who Rescues Lost Souls is the next instalment in the Adirondack Spirit Series.

Now for the interview -

In the mid-1850s, over 30k children were living on the streets of New York City. Children as young as four and five had to lie, cheat, and steal just to survive. Some of the children were true orphans; others were not. Either way, their situation was dire, and something had to be done. So, between 1855 and 1929, over 250k children from New York and Boston were sent west on what was later referred to as 'the orphan trains' to find new homes.

When I first overheard a discussion regarding the Orphan Trains twenty years ago, I had never even published my first book, and yet I knew that I would someday write a story about an orphan train rider. At the time, I was dabbling with what would eventually be my first romance novel and assumed that romance would be the heart of the storyline. I jotted a few notes and moved on, writing and publishing mostly romance books.

Then, one day in 2017, while visiting a train museum in Green Bay Wisconsin, something wonderful happened. The voices showed up, filling my head with ideas and telling me that now was the time. I began researching everything I could find on the orphan trains. It took nearly eighteen years from the moment I first heard about the orphan trains until I moved forward with the project. A good thing as the single book idea morphed into a planned eighteen book historical fiction saga (not romance) that revolves around the orphan trains. Not only did the idea morph, but I also found myself as well. Since writing Discovery, the first in The Orphan Train Saga, I've also transitioned, preferring to write historical fiction over anything else. While regular fiction is easier, I find that I love the challenge that comes with writing historical fiction. I also enjoy incorporating history into each book, using mostly forgotten history to tell the child's story.

I introduce seventeen of the eighteen children in Discovery, book one of The Orphan Train Saga. Discovery tells Mileta's story, and each book after that will tell one of the other children's tale. The reader will follow each child from their earliest memory and find out what caused their homelessness. The reader will journey with the children on the train and follow their lives as they grow.

When I began writing The Orphan Train Saga, I thought I was writing for an adult audience. While each book starts with the person's first memory, the children grow up, and there are real-life situations. With that being said, the books are void of swearwords, and there is no overly graphic content. Since Discovery's release in December of 2018, I've received e-mails from children as young as nine, letting me know how much they are enjoying this saga and the history that surrounds it. So, now when I'm asked, I just say it's for ages 9 to 99+.

Lastly, while Discovery can be read and enjoyed on its own if you decide to keep reading -which I hope you do- you'll want to read the books in order. Some of the children's lives are so intertwined that a subsequent book will give you a greater understanding of something from a previous book when told from a different perspective.

Along with writing historical fiction, I also travel the country lecturing on The History of the Orphan Trains. The plight of those children continues to call to me. It is my mission to make sure they are not forgotten. Please help me to keep the children's memories alive by joining me on this journey.

Sherry A Burton

Born in Kentucky, Sherry got her start in writing by pledging to write a happy ending to a good friend who was going through some really tough times. The story surprised her by taking over and practically writing itself. What started off as a way to make her friend smile started her on a journey that would forever change her life. Sherry readily admits to hearing voices and is convinced that being married to her best friend for thirty-eight plus years goes a long way in helping her write happily-ever-afters. Sherry is the author of The Orphan Train Saga novels, a planned eighteen book historical fiction saga that revolves around the historic orphan trains. Books in the saga include Discovery, Shameless, Treachery and Guardian. Loyal, the fifth in the saga, expected to release summer of 2021. Sherry resides in Michigan and spends most of her time writing from her home office, traveling to book signing events and giving lectures on the Orphan Trains.
